Why I'm defining myself as a Creative Expansionist/Painter

    Following my purist ideals of self-education through experimentation; I've developed into an artist who has multiple areas of interest and direction.
    The conventional wisdom of finding one area of painting style and staying with it just doesn't fit me (though I understand the economic realities of that attitude).  Some Galleries I've dealt with personally have had a very hard time explaining to their clients why one artist can do a group of paintings that apperear as if they've been done by several artists.
    Struggling with this idea of how to define my work and philosophical approach to my Art I went to an artist residency in the South of France in the Spring of 2006.  It was during this time spent in meditation, discussion with my fellow artists and readings about other artists that I developed the concept of calling myself a Creative Expansionist.

    My reasoning follows;
        a. I'm always pushing my personal boundaries as an artist
        b. I work in series
        c. I constantly build and add to my knowledge
        d. I have many directions of interest
        e. I'm very productive

    Embracing an Oriental attitude that a fellow artist mentioned to me in the early 1990's added greatly to my current reasoning.   This attitude; to my understanding, is - the Making a piece of Art is the Art, what's left at the end is just residue (ie.the painting).  This allows for tremendous spontaneity and less angst and ego about the out come.  It means I can play with my mediums and ideas.
    I use many mediums in my paintings and where technically I can safely combine them; I often will.
As I've grown as an Artist (my capablities of expression) and with the combination of knowledge in Abstraction, Realism, Impressionism, Expressionism (and all other -ism's) my "vocabulary" continues to grow.
     Despite my many varied approaches to Art, those who have followed my work for the past  decades have been able see the connections in my efforts; such as how aspects of my forays into Abstraction translate into my works in Still lifes.  I'm inspired to create Art about many subjects, from many different perspectives, using a variety of "ism's" and my very own "flavor".
    Working in Series allows for the through exploration of technique and expression of an idea.  I do tend to have favorite areas of focus such as landscape; especially those far distant views, or how can an artist explore the concept of Quantum Physics on a two dimensional plane?
    Art is a language. Other Artist's work often creates a conversation within me; a discussion of color, texture, content and intent which sparks my own contribution to the conversation.  I am Inspired to dive into that great discussion of Art and Life via my own efforts of Art Making.  Every Artist (if they are more than just a copyist) has their own Flavor and Perspective, adding to the great language of ART.
    I am blessed to be an Artist.
